There are some great ones online. Then there are some pretty average games that are just the same as a hundred others you have already played. The games on this page are the best of the best. Once you have tried them, you will know just how much you have been missing.

Free online car games get better and better everyday. The shockwave player especially, allows for unbelievably good graphics. So, it's always worth checking for the latest ones. Soon they will be as good as ‘Need for Speed’, 'Project Gotham' and all those other expensive PC games.

TrackMania Nations Forever. The Best Free Offline Racer.

Most of the best free car driving games need to be played online. One great exception is trackmania. Download and play this free on your PC, no strings attached, Nothing is better than free except free and great game play.

The original game was released in 2006 and was one of the most popular PC racing games of all time. It will still give you all the thrills and spills you want, with neat control responses and a good set of tracks.

You can also chat online with other players if you want to connect to the web. You can even race with friends against the clock.

Driving Speed 2 Free to play on a PC

One more offline racer that you can download and play on you PC for free is Driving Speed 2. It is a fully featured racing game with great graphics that you can play on your own or with friends on the net. There are not many cars to choose from and only 2 tracks but for a free game this is great find.

Driftnburn 365

Ok, this game is getting old now but it is still one of the best racing car games online ever

They really got the driving right in this one. The easy controls make it possible to travel at terrifying speed with complete control. The cars drift out on the corners just as they do on real racetracks. Using the turbo gives you a jolt that can kick you past half a dozen rivals. If you haven't played this game, you just haven't raced.

It was such a great game they made a sequel. The second game in the series has better graphics but this one is still worth a visit for those great controls.

Drift and Burn 2

The graphics are way better here. You also spend a lot of time shooting through the air from one part of the track to the next which adds to the thrills.

As an extra feature, you can build a track and post it for other players to use or you can play on the best tracks other players have designed,

To get the best cars you need to win games, starting racking up the points then trade them for upgrades.You will have to be a pretty good driver to get the best cars.

This is a great sequel but is it better than the Drift n Burn 365? You decide.

Speed Racer from Candy Tracks

A top racing game. There are 5 tracks with a roller coaster ride and insane cornering. The cars drive well and if you just learn to trust your instincts you will be flying around. Bonus points for jumps and airborne acrobatics. That pink track takes a bit of getting used to- but who cares if the game is cooler than the Martian winter?

Drag Racer

Everyone needs a drag racing game. This is one of the newest from Phantom Racing. You can also find a link on the page to download the game and play it on your computer anytime.

Oversize

OK, this is a game with a gaint truck, not a car but it's still a great game. The track is one of the best and the racing is tough. You won't win at this game straight away but it is good enough to make you really want to try.

Stock cars are built for damage. Expect a lot of crashes and high octane thrills.

Sandstorm Racer

This a well above average racer with great drift and really fun tracks. You out in the desert and after a quick practice lap you are thrown it at the deep end. 

There is a lot of game play here with five opponents, ten tracks and eight levels. Get points for top three places and head up the rankings on the leader board.

Remember that they will send you back if you miss going through any of the pairs of lights.

Age of Speed 2

This is a a futuristic racer with a lot of high air action, cork screw race tracks and big, big loops. There is also some pretty good racing on the flat and the whole thing has a good feel. You know when the designers have tried. Here have tried and pretty much got it right.

What is it like to drive a real car? Could you pass a driving test right now? This game will let you find out.

To play, you choose a driving instructor and take some lessons. Learn how to park, deal with traffic lights and other road users. When you are ready for the big day go for it. If you pass they give you a donut. Is it a real donut? Sadly, it is not.

Stunt Mania

Stunt Mania has some of the best online graphics- the whole thing looks like a Pixar movie (you know Toy Story, etc).

There are plenty of levels- though you need to get good at the game before you they give you the best places to play.

One of the most important things is to set the controls at the beginning of the game or your car won’t behave the way you want. A screen will show you how before you play.

Okay this is not a car. It’s a truck. But it is one of the biggest trucks ever and it is on one of the coolest tracks ever. Can it stunt? Oh yes, it can really stunt!

Bombay Taxi.

After a hard day driving around Bombay, you need to do the most difficult job of the day. You need to go back to the taxi car park and park that car.

OK, that sounds easy, Well... it would be if there was a bit more space. You need skill and precision and patience to get this right. You also need to look out for the hundred and one things that get in your way. It's not an impossible game but it is difficult enough for you to feel really satisfied when you get it right.

This is not a car driving game, just some extra fun if you like great cars.

These games let you build the car of your dreams with everything from an Alpha Romeo to a Russian jeep to customise. The sad thing is you can't drive them- but then, if you did, you might scratch them. They are way too beautiful to scratch.
