Facebook's Best Online Game- FarmVille Tips and Tricks

85

By Will Apse

Facebook's FarmVille is one of those online games that can be played in lots of different ways. Some people are just happy to amble along with a small, neat farm. Most of us are pretty competitive, though, and like to accumulate XP (experience points) quickly to zoom through those levels.

There is no perfect way to do this but there are lots of ways of improving your game play and reaching those higher levels- and all the new crops that they unlock- faster.

Top Tips for FarmVille

Get yourself some Neighbors.

This is one of the most important things to do. The FarmVille makers deliberately designed this online game to reward social gamers.

Persuade friends or strangers to start up around you and you get a lot of benefits. You can expand your business more easily and own more land. Also you can help out on neighbor's places and get more XP and coins.

If you go into the Facebook's forums, you often see gamers begging for neighbors and some even promise many gifts in return. Other gamers just get to a good level then ask for invites from people at similar levels. The better the levels of your neighbors, the better the gifts they send.

You can also get a Local Celebrity Ribbon for adding many neighbors which translates into a big reward. If you take pics of all your neighbors you can get a Shutterbug Ribbon.

Tractor, seeder and harvester in Farmville.
Tractor, seeder and harvester in Farmville.

Tractors and Fuel

I like my online games for free but anyone using a credit card gets definite advantages.

A tractor can be bought from the market just with coins. This will speed up plowing (plows 4 squares with one click)  but you get limilted free fuel every day. You can buy extra fuel with a credit card to get round this. If you buy an extra fuel tank it gives you 150 fuel but it won't fill up free on a daily basis. Once you have used all 150, you will need to buy again.

You can also buy a seeder and a harvester which speed up seeding and harvesting but, again, you have the fuel issue to think about.

Faster Leveling in Farmville

Some ways to rise through the game levels quicker.

Mixed Harvests or just one Crop at a time?

For a real FarmVille pro, achieving the right balance of crops, trees and animals is the essence of the game. This is a matter of experimenting with the crops available at each level. This is one reason FarmVille is fiendishly addictive- different levels need different fixes. You will have to study the tables like the ones down the page.

One approach that will work pretty well at every level is the quick turnover of harvests described below. Instead of mixing crops that give XP with crops that give coins, you just alternate between the two. One day you grow crops that give good coins, another day crops that give good XP. Of course, if you are topping up your FV-money with a credit card you can just go for the XP every time.

Quick Turnover Harvests

The faster you keep the plow, sow and harvest cycle turning over, the more coins and XP points you will accumulate. Also, the better the shape that your farm is in, the better it performs. So get all the farm upgrades that you can then add extra fields up to the maximum allowed. Planting and harvesting quickly will soon bring in the rewards.

To get XP

Say you have 240 fields (easily achievable). If you sow the cheap, quick harvesting plants (see list below)- the ones that can be harvested in a day and yield 2 XP, your total XP increase for that day will be 720, since:

Each field gives 1 XP= 240

Each field harvested gives 2 XP= 480

Total= 720. A good haul.

If you want to use the higher yielding crops that take longer before harvesting, do a little math to make sure you get the same return. Often, you just don't. On the other hand, slow growing crops may be essential if you can only visit your farm occasionally. Remember that they spoil if you miss the harvesting window.

How to Keep the FarmVille-Money Coming

You need to buy the seeds, pay for plowing etc so remember to plant good coin producing crops as soon as funds run low. Always keep something for expenses!

The crops that deliver most coins per hour are listed in the table at the bottom of the page.

If you see “Super Berries” in the market these will harvest in 2 hours and you can sell for 100 coins. Super Berries are usually only around for a day or two though. The last time was when FarmVille reached 5 million visitors, Worth watching out for.

Also, visit your neighbors farms regularly. If you are lucky, a pop up will ask if you want to do some weeding or other job. Filling in surveys, as described below, is boring but gives a steady stream of FV-cash.

Hay bales and Ribbons

Rich and want to level quickly? Buy hay bales. They will give you 5 XP each. Buy as many as you have room for, delete and buy more.

Buying hay bales also gives you a Pack Rat Ribbon pretty quickly. You can also get an Architect blue ribbon (with the same reward) by buying rest rooms.

Best Yielding Trees and Animals

Focus on the animals that yield a lot like Horses, Goats, Ducks and Rabbits (50 coins each). The best trees are Pomegranate, Banana and Passion fruit tree's (100 coins each).

Ask for these as gifts and avoid all the low yielding animals and trees.

Gifts

The only real reason for asking for the whole range of gifts is to get a blue ribbon for unique gifts. You need 21 unique gifts in your box (not working on your farm) to qualify and get that game bonus.

Knowing where you are going- Levels in FarmVille

The blog below has a list of the levels you can acheive, from Level 1 - 0 XP  (Field Hand) to Level 70 - 437000 XP (World Fair Champ).

How many people have acheived the maximum level? Well nobody has owned up to being such a gaming addict they have passed fifty (though I will take corrections on this). My own level is a sad 33 which makes me a Livestock Lord. I guess that is better than being an Udder King.

http://farmvillegame.blogspot.com/2009/09/farmville-levels.html

Automate FarmVille

Some of the tasks in FarmVille are pretty time consuming. Clicking a couple of hundred squares to plow, seed and harvest them can make those fingers ache. Also, you can't always harvest on time and some of your crop is wasted.

There are various free scripts that can do some of the clicking for you and also programs like Extreme Farmville Manager or Farm Helper which will do a lot of stuff automatically. This can help hugely with income and levelling up. If you are interested you could try this page.

hubpages.com/hub/Farmville-Automation-Guide

FarmVille Cash

FarmVille cash is different to coins. It is signified by the notes symbol next to the coins at the top of the screen. Every time you go up a level you are given one more unit of FV-cash. You can also buy FV-cash online.

Farm of the Week

This competition is easy to enter and if you win you can pick up 100 cash. All it takes is a photo of your whole farm.

It isn't always won my old stagers. Even pretty new farms get chosen sometimes. The judges just want something a little bit out of the ordinary which shows 'originality, effort and presentation'.

This is where you post:

http://forums.zynga.com/showthread.php?t=535011

Use the Farmville Tool Bar

This lets you keep in touch with your farm while you are doing something else on the net. It has an update function and a harvest countdown. There are also bonuses available and a surprising number of good things can come your way. How about a golden egg with 20 free fuel top-ups? That will speed up your farm!

The drawback is that only Firefox and Internet Explorer are supported.

Email Notifications when a Harvest is Due

If you are forgetful these can save you a lot of withered crops.

Just visit your “Email Preferences” page on FarmVille.com

Co-op Farming

This is another of those 'get to meet the neighbors' things and it can be fun. You need to coperate to get certain tasks done in a limited amount of time and then you can pick up your reward.

This is only available to a limited number of farmers right now but as the technical issues are fixed it will gradually roll out- so keep your eyes open. There are some nice bonuses in cash and decorations.

Farmville crop mastery
Farmville crop mastery

Farmville Stars and Crop Mastery

Crop mastery is something that only becomes available at level 10. It won't make you rich in Farmville but it does add an interesting dimension to the game.

If you want the tables and bottom line on crop stars this is the page for you:Farmville Crop Mastery

Fertilizer

FarmVille's creators recently announced that they will be randomly selecting users to receive free bags of fertilizer. Crops that are given fertilizer will grow bigger and sparkle. They will also give extra XP's when harvested.

You can only apply the fertilizer to neighbor's farms but you get a reward for doing this and you can also pick up a ribbon.

FarmVille Hacks and Cheats

I don't enjoy using cheats in any online game,- like I said before, I like the slow but engrossing play of normal games. The cheats/hacks and exploitations of software glitches are interesting to see in action though. There is a speed trick that you can use. If your avatar is trapped by signs or anything else (like hay bales) then any plowing, etc that you order is done instantly. Just surround your avatar with obstacles so it can't move and you will save hours of time.

It's worth remembering that If you use any of the cheats you could find yourself banned for life from facebook's online games. Enjoy your farming!

Other Facebook Games

There are plenty other fun games on Facebook. Happy Aquarium is a relaxing alternative to the trials of running a big FarmVille farm. Zyngas latest game FrontierVille offers some new challenges. If you want to play this game a few FrontierVille tips will help, otherwise just explore the many facets of the game to see if it is right for you.

A few other games that you might recommend to the kids who are not allowed to play Facebook games- officially at least. One is construction games for kids who like to build things or think physics games are cool. Another is vet games for those young ones who like animals enough to want to make them a big part of their lives,

Great Article Will But I think you overlook something...

"Best Yielding Trees and Animals

Focus on the animals that yield a lot like Horses, Goats, Ducks and Rabbits (50 XP each). The best trees are Pomegranate, Banana and Passion fruit tree's (100 XP each)."

XP means experience right, you should've said farmville coins...

"Ask for these as gifts and avoid all the low yielding animals and trees."

I think the low yielding trees and animals can play a vital role at the start of the game, they are cheap, but you can use them to accomplish the ribbon quest which gives big XP and farm coins.

and if you'll rely on friend's gifts that would be very tiresome and stressful, I prefer playing the farmville with so much wit. One thing more how about trapping your farmville character (a bug)to plow, harvest, and plant with ease even without vehicles like seeder or harvester or plower...

to get neighbors I see a lot of people putting their email addresses to get them, then, I got the idea creating this page to organize it, go there, use it to invite them and put your email at the end for next people invite you too: http://www.websin12hours.com/farmville-neighbors-e

Can someone explain how many squares you have to plant to get the stars on each seed? I've been planting one crop pretty much exclusively and it seems that the 3rd star is a long time coming.

Will Apse profile image

Will Apse Hub Author 2 years ago

FarmVille crop mastery stars depend on the number of harvests that you make. The first and second stars don't usually take too many harvests but often the final star is a long time coming.

Just as an Example For Pumpkins

1 star is 500 squares harvested

2 stars is 1000 squares harvested

3 stars is 3750 squares harvested

For raspberries the third star only comes after 15000 harvests!

The bonuses:

1st star- you get a bonus of 50 coins.

2nd star- you get a bonus of 100 coins.

3rd star- you get a bonus of 150 coins.

I'll put a full table together soon.

Karen 2 years ago

Thanks for the info, Will! As soon as I posted that I harvested my grape crop and got the third gold star.

Thanks for your HUB!

Will Apse profile image

Will Apse Hub Author 2 years ago

Congratulations, Karen. I am just a little bit jealous!

Once you get the third star you get extra XP if you grow that crop. The extra XP is anywhere from 5 to 10 points. It doesn't come with every square harvested though, just on random squares. The game makers like to keep us guessing.

Anyone know how to do the terracing with the hedges to make them higher ?

Will Apse profile image

Will Apse Hub Author 2 years ago

You can stack hay bales so that they look like a pyramid. It's an optical illusion based on how you place the bales. You can also stack fences.

Terraced hedges I have not seen yet but it is probably the same principle.

How to stack things in Farmville: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-TFTenf58l4

im at level 38, i have a villa, and 32 fv bucks. peas are most defintely the best crops u can harvest, especially in mass quantities. i have my farm set up on a routine for me to check it once a day, and everyday after i cycle through my peas i harvest i get 2000xp everyday. by the way i cultivate every block of land on my farm to get the best for my buck. peas are the only regular crops that will get u 3 xp for planting, nonetheless it gets u a pretty good profit it a quit amount of time, 1 day!

I enjoy leaving the real world to enter the world of farms, cafe's and zoos. I am 56 years old and this is the first time I have ever played computer games. My grandkids love to look at all the animals on my farm.......

Excellent site - thank you.

Does anyone know about those gold coins that pop out of the ground when plowing?

Will Apse profile image

Will Apse Hub Author 2 years ago

A lot of people are wondering about those gold coins, Kitty. Some people think it is a gold potato! Whatever it is they are very hard to catch...

I have just realized what those Farmville gold coins mean (the ones that sometimes appear when you are plowing). You have just won 100 coins! I have seen them around a few times but usually I've been too distracted to notice the income. Also, there is no need to try and catch them. Just enjoy the show.

You are very welcome, Clovisman. You are just getting involved in the most popular online game in the world. And there is a reason for that- it is a great game and it always evolving.

By the way, I forgot the most important tip of all in the page above- just enjoy every visit to your farm and it will be richer, bigger and better with every visit.

It's great to get an idea of the speed of coins earned, by taking into account the time to harvest, the sale cost and profit per day - it's like math, but it's so helpful.

denny 23 months ago

my dog is hungry, however the "feed" option has disappeared. cant figure out the problem, does anyone know what I"m missing? I know it must be simple! thanks!!

Amber Skye 23 months ago

denny:

To feed your dogs now, just go to your giftbox and grab a treat and click it over the dog to feed it.

I'm new to face book where I just signed up a few weeks ago and I find out that there are too many players of Farm Ville where I received too many invites. Anyway, I'm glad that I found your informative article as a good guide for newbie players.

I don't play Farmville because I don't have the time to but I have always wondered why all these invitations keep popping up. Now, I totally get the idea.

julie-girl 23 months ago

How much farm cash is needed to harvest crops with a plane? I already received my free first harvest.

Will Apse profile image

Will Apse Hub Author 23 months ago

The whole aircraft thing is a it a bit of a mystery at the moment. Some people say you need to use it right after you plant the seeds, some people say it will work any time. As for how much it costs there are a lot of different reports too- some say it costs nothing. others that it takes at least some FV cash. All in all, it seems to be affected by a glitch or two that will take a while to settle down.

Sarcastro 22 months ago

My apologies if this is already mentioned in the article.

It's not necessary to pick up the items/bonuses before they disappear... if you watch your meters at the top, they're added to your totals as they disappear.

You don't get the 'bonus' coins (top right), but it saves some frantic clicking.

Jessa Parker 18 months ago

A tip - save time and use a wall bonus collector like BonusBuddy http://www.facebook.com/bonusbuddyapp It’s easy to use and and works great!

JessHeart 18 months ago

My dad is on level 64, and, to tell the truth, he's almost addicted to it. :P

Will Apse profile image

Will Apse Hub Author 18 months ago

There are worse things to be addicted to, JessHeart!

Maybe you should take him camping, though. Dad's need that kind of thing. Forbid him any electronic devices for a whole weekend and see how copes. If he gets the shakes, you know it is time to make him take up fishing or golf.

david scurlock 10 months ago

sheep and pig breeding: the father pattern is more prevalent i think...and BEFORE you place the new calf change the tool to the multi-tool, and you can have it stored in the gift box....then you go to your ENGLISH farm and place it in your breeding nest with cross breeding....and get unique blends... and also ALWAYS use crop mastery when harvesting no sense in NOT HAVING DOUBLE EXP for each crop...the best tip is: one farm square =1 exp and about 100 coin hr.....maybe double if your a pro.....but ......16x TREES can fit in this square if you have lvl 2 trees this can mean 400 coin and 16 exp per square...so 7000 coin and 16 exp....every 3 days plus no rebuy on them so its easy to see trees are the riches
