Surgery Games Online
84There are 14 surgery games on this page. Some of them are just for fun. Some need some serious surgical skills. All of them will take you into the world of the operating room.
There is not too much blood- but there is some. So be prepared. This is not for anyone who faints at the sight of a bone saw!
Games on this Page
- Heart Operations
- Knee and hip replacement
- Brain surgery- with an electrode that needs to go in exactly the right place.
- Games for kids but also great surgery games for adults too...
Heart Surgery
These are some of the most popular games. There are 3 to chose from.
Open Heart Surgery
This game that allows you to perform a heart by-pass operation. Sometimes, the blood vessel that supplies the heart gets blocked. This is not good news- the heart needs plenty of blood to work properly. When it happens, a vein is taken from the person's leg and used to replace the blocked vessel.
It’s not for people who are faint hearted but it is very easy to get wrapped up in this game. By the time you finish, you will have snipped out the bad blood vessels and sewn in the replacements. With a little practice your patient will live a hundred years.
Play Game: The Heart Game at RollerCoaster
A race against time to save a patient with a heart problem. Keep a close eye on the vital signs...
Heart Operation Game
There are 4 separate kinds of heart operation to perform in this game.
You can perform a heart bypass operation, a heart transplant, a hole in the heart operation or just fix some heart valves that aren't working properly.
This game involves some quite scary procedures (even though it’s in a cartoon, not at all gory format) like slicing through the breast bone and opening the chest with retractors. So be prepared!
Open Heart Surgery from PBS
You get the chance to perform open heart surgery here in 19 steps. There are a whole range of instruments to use and a donor heart to implant.
Neat graphics and clear to play.
Virtual Surgery Games
These are very detailed and true-to-life games. You can perform operations in the way they are performed by real surgeons.
Knee Surgery
Everything wears out in the end. Sportsmen like footbal players can wear out a knee real quick. The operation here lets people walk and run normally with a metal and plastic knee that you install.
After getting the patient ready you move on to using a bone drill, a mallet, a rongeur, a scalpel and a bovie. These are the essential tools of any surgery and if you want to know how they work. all you have to do is play the game.

Virtual Tonsilectomy
The tonsils are found in the throat and you can see them if you open your mouth wide,
Tonsils fight infections in healthy people but sometimes the germs they are exposed to overpower them. Doctors usually give antibiotics but sometimes this not enough.
If the tonsils keep on getting infected they need to be taken out before the infection can spread to other parts of the body.
There is some friendly help in this game as you cut out the diseased tonsils.
Game: surgerysquad.com/tonsillectomy-surgery/#
There are several other games on this site including a slightly scary Lasik eye surgery game.
Hip Replacement
All of Edhead's games give a great idea of what a real operation is all about. This hip replacement is just as detailed as the knee replacement above and just as fascinating. It's another one of those procedures people need who have pushed their body pretty hard. A new hip can get even serious athletes back in business.
So if you liked the knee surgery game above and want to try some new tools and some new techniques, this is for you:
Virtual Hip Resurfacing
This game is also about fixing a bad hip but instead of getting rid of the whole of the bad hip and replacing it with a new one, You just work on the stuff at the surface that has gone bad.
Preview of the Hip Surgery Game
Virtual Brain Surgery
This is one of the biggest and most realistic Edhead games with 5 separate steps.
You need to cure a woman who has an illness called Parkinson’s disease. She’s been sick for a while and it makes her shake. The shakes are so bad that she can hardly sign her own name.
The problem is deep down inside her brain and can only be fixed by opening up her skull and placing an electrode in the area that is not working properly. The electrode will deliver a small electric shock every so often to stimulate the brain and stop the shakes.
Find out how to get that probe in the right place and get some brain surgery skills.
Just for Fun Games
These are not your 'learn-real-surgery' games but there are a lot of fun to play. There is a very sick rabbit to cure and a plenty of teeth going bad that need to be fixed. So enjoy.
Dental Damage
Bad teeth are bad news! Tooth decay in this game is a green tidal wave that will sweep those perfect molars away unless you zap the germs at full speed. You have root canal treatments to perform and if things get too bad you will have to pull out the rotten molars. Yuk!
If you let things get out of hand, the green slime reaches tidal wave proportions, the teeth disappear and you are going to lose the game!
Remember- nobody wants to be without any teeth. How can you eat your candy bars?
- Dental Damage
Floss, drill and blast those teeth into perfect shape! You know you love to floss.
Which is the Best Surgery Game?
See results without votingCure the Bunny
If you have had a pet rabbit anytime in your life you might want to avoid this game. It isn't kind to furry creatures.
At the same time, it does have great graphics and music and it is hilarious even for people who think it's wrong to run spiders from of the house (but it’s raining out!).
Some things you have the chance to do-
- Shave off his soft and cuddly fur.
- Revive your rabbit with jump leads.
- Operate with a scalpel the size of a fence post.
- Sing along with the heavenly choir if you make a mistake and your rabbit ascends to a better place
Drawn Together Cavity Search
If you have ever seen "Drawn Together", the Comedy Central TV Show, then you will remember the characters in this game like Wooldor Sockbat, Spanky Ham and Princess Clara.
Things are not looking so good for them when we meet them in the operating room. Spanky Ham needs some bacon slicing out of his intestines. The Princess needs some very icky tentacle fat removing from her stomach. Wooldoor Sockbat is wrestling with a gigantic tape worm that is threatening to eat him from the inside out.
So you have to do something! You can’t let these guys suffer any more- they are stars of the small screen and that princess is so cute!
Let's Operate
This is probably the simplest game on this page but it is still fun. Your patients have a whole collection of strange things stuck inside them and you have to cut them out.
If you want to get through all ten levels you will need to be good with a mouse. You will also need to watch the blood bag carefully. Once it has all run out, you lose the game.
A word of warning. If you get the operation wrong, except a few screams from your patient.
Extraction Reaction
This is another skill game that tests your reactions and mouse control. It is a lot more difficult than Let's Operate, though!
You have a pair of forceps and you need to extract a marble from someone's intestines. The trick is not to touch the sides or any of the organs. This sounds easy enough until you come across kidneys that spin. After the kidneys, things start to get really tough!
Get someone to mop your brow while you try this!
Bostin Voyage- save Heavy Metal from itself
Old rockers get some horrible diseases. Sometimes, the treatments needed are drastic. Mutant viruses need a little tender loving destruction. Bowels need to be searched for sharp objects. The occasional bomb might need to be dropped when the bacteria begin to run out of control.
It is just another day at the office for the celebrity doctor but this time you can join in the fun!
Surgery Games for Teenagers and Adults
Dark Cut 1, 2, 3
People who like the surgery games above also like this series. The difference here is scary, realistic graphics that make the games only suitable for older teens. You are a surgeon trying to fix up soldiers hurt in battle. These are games that need a lot of practice to win but are very addictive.
Dark Cut is best played at Armor games- they made them. It's only here that you find all the bonus scenarios.
You will find them all on this page, way down the bottom (together with amateur surgeon below) armorgames.com.
Amateur Surgeon Game
A hobo gets hit by a pizza delivery truck. Things don't look so good for the old guy. Any normal person would call 911 but this pizza delivery guy is not normal (I mean just look at him!). He decides to operate himself- or, more importantly, you get to operate on his behalf.
Salad tongs and a pizza slice are the main surgical tools in this game. This might not sound much but in the right hands they are life savers. Get it right and the old guy will survive and teach you how to perform many other surgeries since he was once a great surgeon himself.
The over-the-top graphics are straight out of South Park.
For link, see Armor games above.
The Amateur Surgeon Game and the Dark Cut Series are R-rated!
Older games to play in a DOSBox
Life and Death 2: The Brain
This game is older than most of the people that play it! Despite that, It is still a great game and was the inspiration for many of the other games on this page.
It was developed by a real surgeon and features real surgical procedures, including the brain surgery in the video above. You have the chance to learn to use sophisticated equipment and work at speed in a video game that is one of the most convincing around.
It is also fun- I mean, you get to open up your patient's head and fix his brain!
You need to play this game in a DOSbox (instructions are below).
The Frog
Not many people would tell you that dissecting a frog is fun. In fact if you meet someone who does tell you that, you might be well advised to keep your distance.
On the other hand, this is a fascinating game and it is fun. Most of all though. it is an exploration of what makes a living thing tick.
This also needs to be played in a DOSbox.
The DOSBox
The DOSbox can be downloaded free from Sourceforge here:sourceforge
After you Install the DOSBox check out the brief tutorial here: how-to-play
Its pretty simple and soon you will be playing!
There are a lot of great, older games to play on a dos box. You can find them on abandonia.com and also here: http://www.dosbox.com/comp_list.php?letter=a
The Trauma Center Series
- Trauma Center
- Trauma Center 2: Under the Knife
- Trauma Center: Second Opinion
- Trauma Center:New Blood
Platforms: Wii and Nintendo DS
A great storyline with movie style action sequences, very smart graphics and exciting, detailed surgeries to perform, made the Trauma Center Series a big success for Nintendo DS and WII.
It takes a lot of practice and high skill levels to progress through these games. Even now, they are some of the most intense video games out there.
Rated as suitable for Teens.
Trauma Center
Lifesigns Surgical Unit
This was a trailblazer when it first came out, long ago. It paved the way for the Trauma Center series with a storyline and operations embedded in the storyline. The problem is the story is relationship-heavy, action-light and not as exciting as most gamers want.
On the other hand, if you are a collector of surgery games this is one you just need to have.
Overall: the surgical stuff is fun once you get to it but there should have been more.
You can still find these games on Amazon.
Deep Sea Surgeon Game
Games with any kind of surgical angle are getting more and more popular. You can even operate on Spongebob. Unfortunately, its not cosmetic surgery (he was never a good looking sponge).
Something uncomfortable has happened in his intestines and you are the one to fix it. Personally, I think it would have been more fun to have a look inside Patrick. I mean what goes on in a starfish?
This game can be played at Nick.com, just look for 'Spongebob'. If you live outside the US then they won't let you play. Yes, sad to say, they really are that mean.

Virtual Surgery Training
The video below shows how realistic virtual surgery techniques are becoming. The virtual heart responds to 'touch' in completely life like way.
Help With the Knee Virtual Surgery Game
If you ever want to find out what a surgical word means try this site: wikisurgery.com/
Some of the more difficult words and phrases from games on this page explained:
patella, femur, tibia, : these are the names of the bones in the leg.
- tibia= shin bone in lower leg
- patella= knee
- femur= thigh bone, .
vital signs: these are all the things a doctor measures to see if someone is healthy. They include how much oxygen is in the blood (oximetry) how fast the heart is beating (pulse rate), and blood pressure which is an indicator of how strongly the heart is beating.
prep the patient: get the patient ready for surgery. The area to be operated on needs to be sterile. Some hair might need to shaved off. The area needs to be cleaned and treated with betadine (germ killing liquid) In this game a plaster cast also needs to put around the knee so it won't move during the operation.
cartilage: Bone is hard brittle stuff and if two bones were to rub directly against each other they would soon start to chip and break up. Cartilage is the white material you sometimes see in a pork chop- not as hard as bone but rubbery and tough. It is used by the body in places where bones meet- like the knee and hip. It stops bones rubbing together, cushion impacts and is slippery enough to provide smooth movements of joints.
the IV lead: an IV lead is used to slowly feed fluids into a patients blood stream. The lead is just a plastic tube with a bottle of fluid as a reservoir. The fluid drips slowly into the tube and gravity pushes it into the patient's arm or hand via a needle. An IV is sometimes called 'a drip'. The fluid may contain medication, plasma or food.
an incision: an incision is simply a cut. It can be made with a knife or a bovie (see below for explanation of a bovie)
bovie: This is used to cut skin and also seal up wounds. An electric current makes the tip of the bovie red hot. Blood congeals if it is heated so the tool can stop bleeding as it cuts.
a rongeur: a rongeur is like a pair of very sharp pliers and are normally made of stainless steel. In this operation, they are used to cut away any pieces of bone that might stop the metal knee prosthetic fitting properly.
prosthetic: anything that is attached to the body to help with walking or posture is called a prosthetic. A pirates wooden leg is an example of a prosthetic. The plastic and metal knee surgically attached to the leg bones in this game is a prosthetic.
anaesthesiologist: during the operation, drugs (sometimes as a gas) are given to the patient so that he or she sleeps or experiences no pain. Amnestics are used which make a person forget everything that has happened. Anti-inflammatories are used to stop swelling. Muscle relaxants make the patient relax.
perpendicular lines: these are lines that cut across the main line at a right angle.
Help with Deep Brain Stimulation Virtual Surgery Game
Parkinson’s Disease: this is a kind of illness that gives people the shakes. A tiny part of the brain has stopped working in the way that it should work. It usually only happens to older people.
Sterile: if something has no bacteria, viruses or other germs on it, it is sterile. Keeping everything in an operating theatre germ free is one of the most important parts of any operation. The air needs filtering, hands need scrubbing, surgical instruments need boiling at high temperature etc.
Skull: the bony part of the head that protects the brain from injury. Brains are soft and delicate organs that most of us (but not all!) use a lot. They need plenty of protection.
Deep brain stimulation: a very thin wire is inserted in the brain. It needs to be located in the part of the brain that is damaged. A battery supplies a tiny electric current which stimulates the damaged area so that it works again properly.
Betadine: this is a fluid that kills germs without harming a person. It is painted onto to areas near the site of the incision as a precaution against infection. It can also be mixed into a plastic form (called IO) that can be used to build up a wall ingainst infection. It is bright orange because it contains iodine.
Scalp: the skin on the top of the head where your hair grows.
A Human Brain viewed with an MRI scanner
CT scanner: this is a special kind of x-ray machine. Instead of taking just one x-ray though. it takes a lot, from all kinds of different angles, A powerful computer puts than all together to give a three dimensional picture of the patient's body. CT stands for computer tomography.
MRI Scan: this is similar to a CT scan. It builds up a picture of the inside of the brain. X-rays are good for looking at bones. MRI scans are good for looking at softer parts (like brains). The video above shows a real MRI as it scans through someone's brain.
A local anesthetic:A general anesthetic puts a patient to sleep and they remember nothing about the operation when they wake up- not even being in the operating theater sometimes. A local anesthetic is different. The patient stays awake and just a small area is injected with a medication that numb the pain so an operation can be carried out without discomfort.
Frameless Stereotaxy.: If you are going to place the probe accurately in this game you need a complete 3D map of the brain. Frameless stereotaxy is a technique that combines all the information from the MRI and catscans into a computer representation of your patient's brain.
Fiducials: fiducials are attachment points. In this game, they are screws driven into the patient's skull under a local anesthetic. They need to be located very accurately. The tower machine is attached to the fiducials and can then guide the probe to the right place in the patient's brain.
Trajectory: this is the path or route something follows. In this operation game it is the route the probe takes as you zero in on the area that needs stimulating.
Subthalamic Nucleus (STN): the STN is one of the most important parts of the human brain that controls movement. When it goes wrong people can shake. Regular electric shocks can restore its function. The STN is the place you need to hit with the probe in this game.
Neurosurgeon: A surgeon who specializes in operating on the brain or nervous system is called a neurosurgeon.
So Now You Know-
These games deliver something no other flash games can. They change the ways you see things. Seriously. If you played any of these games you really learnt something about yourself and how things work- especially about how the body works.
If you are interested in other kinds of virtual surgery you can try any of the following websites:
Find out about the latest uses of computer simulated medicine and how they are used to train doctors to perform life saving operations:Virtual_surgery
There is an operation board game involving 'Cavity Sam' that has been around for ever (since the sixties, at least). Wikipedia have an article about it here: Operation Games
Find out about keyhole surgery here:

Robotic Surgery is the Future
If want to know where surgery is headed you should read around about the new generation of nanobots (tiny robots) which will soon be doing the jobs that doctors do now. A recent advance was the creation of a spider bot that a person swallows. Once it is in the persons stomach the spider bots legs pop out and it starts crawling around looking for anything that shouldn't in a persons stomach or intestines: spider-pill
There are also big robots that will perform surgery. Usually they are operated by human surgeons. Often the human surgeons are hundreds or even thousands of miles away. Some robots are being developed that need no human help.

That's a great job Niki. And no one can argue these games make the fine art of surgery a lot more understandable.
